The best smart lock just got even better

Ultion Nuki nabs BSI Kitemark for IoT

The Ultion Nuki smart lock range already had a lot going for it, such as a Brisant Secure 3 Star Plus cylinder and being rated at the Sold Secure Diamond standard.

And now the smart lock specialist can add the British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark for the Internet of Things to its armoury.

The award came after it passed a plethora of in-depth testing including protection against electromagnetic interference, cyber-attacks, and data hacking. Ultion Nuki locks endured rigorous BSI testing procedures, which even involved production line inspections to ensure a secure manufacturing process.

One of the key tests was for electromagnetic interference, where the locks proved they could remain secure and unhackable even when bombarded with radio waves and electromagnetic shocks.

The BSI also evaluated the software update process, attempting to load hacked firmware, which was consistently rejected by the system. Another critical test involved running the locks on flat batteries to ensure they remained secure in mechanical operation mode.

The Nuki app also underwent thorough testing to verify its resilience against hacking attempts and exploitations, confirming its strong coding integrity.

Mechanically, the Ultion Nuki locks had to operate for 100,000 cycles, the equivalent of seven uses a day for 39 years, proving their durability. They also faced extreme temperature tests ranging from -20°C to +60°C and 95% relative humidity, confirming that the locks could withstand dramatic climatic changes without compromising security.

Physical attack resistance was another focal point, with the locks demonstrating strong defenses against drilling, picking, bumping, and snapping. Given that snapping is a common method to breach Euro Cylinder locks, Ultion’s £5,000 security guarantee against such breaches is a testament to their confidence, a promise they have never had to honor.

The Ultion Nuki is the result of a collaboration between British lock maker Ultion and Austrian smart lock system designer Nuki.

It effectively combines a Nuki Smart Lock 3.0, which can be retrofitted onto traditional doors, with a high-quality Ultion door lock and internal handle.

Both the Ultion Nuki and the Nuki Plus are highly recommended by The Ambient; the latter adds built-in Wi-Fi and a rechargeable battery pack to the mix and was also certified for Matter earlier this year.
