Eve will use Google Home APIs to supercharge upcoming Android app

There’s good news for Android users that want to use and control Eve products natively. Previously an Apple-only company, Eve announced it was working on an Android app back in 2022 and now it seems like the development of that app is about to ramp up. Once released, it will mean Android users will be able to control Eve’s range of devices, which include smart plugs, cameras and smart blinds, without a separate platform like Google Home.

Eve announced that it will utilize the newly announced Google Home APIs – something that was detailed during the Google I/O developer conference this week – in the development of the long-awaited Eve app for Android.

The company said the Eve for Android app will allow for the addition, control, and automation of Matter devices directly, eliminating the need for proprietary connection mechanisms or cloud-to-cloud integrations.

There will also be advanced features for Matter-enabled Eve devices, including energy consumption and generation measurement for Eve Energy solutions, autonomous heating schedules for the Eve Thermo smart thermostat, and Adaptive Shading for the Eve Blinds collection. Some of these features aren’t available through other platforms that Eve works with, including Google Home and SmartThings, so the introduction of them for Android users will be key.

Jerome Gackel, CEO of Eve, said: “The Google Home APIs significantly accelerate the development of Eve for Android, providing essential tools for our teams. Eve has always excelled in seamless platform integration without relying on cloud or proprietary technologies. With Google Home APIs, we can deliver the same experience on Android and are thrilled to collaborate closely with Google.”

As mentioned, the Eve app is currently only available on iOS, and it was one of the first companies to embrace HomeKit, with all its products offering HomeKit support, as well as products like Eve Cam and Eve Outdoor Cam supporting HomeKit Secure Video too.

With the launch of an Eve for Android app, the company’s products will cater towards more people with more control outside of the Matter platforms Android users currently have to use. The Eve for Android app will be available for free download from the Google Play Store once the Google Home APIs are publicly released.

Eve has not yet provided information on system requirements and other features upon the app’s release, but Google has said the first apps built on the Home APIs will come to the Play Store and App Store this fall, so there hopefully won’t be too much longer to wait.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
